The Marquee

A small games room on the fifth floor for guests aged eighteen and over. Entirely optional, entirely separate from the rest of the house, and open three nights a week.

Read this first

Entry is restricted to adults aged eighteen and over, and photo identification is checked at the door on every visit. No one under eighteen may enter the room, wait inside it, or watch from the landing. Nothing on this website takes wagers, holds money, or offers play of any kind — the room is a physical space inside the house and nothing more. No result is promised or implied, and no member of staff will ever suggest that you play.

The room itself

The Marquee occupies what was once the caretaker's flat under the roof: a single long room with a stepped ceiling, four dormer windows facing the water, and the original chevron floor. There are three card tables, a full-size billiards table by the north wall, a shelf of house games from backgammon to cribbage, and eight armchairs arranged so that people can sit and talk without joining anything. A small counter serves coffee, water and the same bar list as downstairs until midnight.

It is reached by its own stair from the third landing, behind a door that stays locked to the corridor. Nobody passes through it on the way to anywhere. If you never open that door, your stay is unchanged in every respect: your key, your room, your breakfast, the tide pool and the supper club have nothing to do with it.

Opening

  • Thursday, Friday and Saturday only
  • 20:00 until 01:00; last entry 23:30
  • Closed on all other nights, including holidays
  • Closed entirely when the house is quiet in winter
  • Doors close early if the room is empty by midnight

At the door

  • Photo identification every visit, no exceptions and no arguments
  • House guests and their named adult visitors only
  • Refused entry if identification cannot be checked
  • Refused entry if a guest is unwell or has been drinking heavily
  • You may ask to be refused entry for the rest of your stay, and we will honour it

What we do not do

  • We take no wagers, deposits or payments through this website, and there is nothing to play here on your screen.
  • We run no games of chance for profit, offer no credit, cash nothing, and hold no money for guests.
  • We make no claim about outcomes. Nobody can tell you what any game will do, and anyone who says otherwise is wrong.
  • We do not advertise the room to arriving guests, put cards in bedrooms, or mention it at breakfast.
  • We do not link to gambling operators, and we take nothing from the venues on the parade for pointing you at them.

How staff behave

The person on the door is a member of the house team, not a host paid on how long you stay. They will check identification, tell you what is free, and leave you alone. They will not ask you to sit down, will not offer to keep a table warm, and will not comment if you leave after ten minutes. If someone asks to be shown out, they are shown out at once and nothing is said about it afterwards.

The room closes on time. Clocks are on both end walls, the windows have no blinds, and the counter stops serving at midnight so that the last hour is quiet. If you want the door opened again the following night, you knock like everyone else and show identification again.

Venues on the parade

Three independent gaming venues stand within ten minutes of the front door, north along the promenade. They are nothing to do with this house: separate owners, separate rules, separate age checks, and their own conditions of entry. The desk keeps their published opening hours and will tell you where they are and how long the walk back takes. We have no arrangement with any of them and receive nothing for mentioning them.

If play stops being enjoyable

Set your limits before you go up, decide in advance when you are leaving, and treat any money involved as spent the moment you sit down. If any of that feels difficult, the responsible play page lists the support services we keep at the desk, and the door team will help you step away without discussion.
